Hook

  1. One way is to begin with an anecdote related to your topic. An anecdote is a brief story about a real event or person that may involve a bit of humor or amusement.
  2. Another avenue is to pose a question or a challenge. This is a very effective strategy when writing argumentative essays, but can be adapted for any type of essay.
  3. You can also start off with a quote, especially one the reader may recognize. When using a quote for your hook, make entirely sure you are using the appropriate citation so as to not be considered plagiarism.
  4. Finally, you can also just use a simple but powerful statement. An example of a good statement good be a relevant fact or statistic related to your topic. Once again, be sure to properly cite your sources.

This is the main body of your introduction. It should indirectly inform the reader on what your essay will be about. For example, if your essay is about a book, give at least 3-5 sentences regarding the storyline, as well as key points you will be covering.
